Professional Coaching—

The "Missing Link"
A new model of coaching for our schools

||
What's "Coaching" all about?
Coaching has been in our schools for well over 20 years. It’s taken the form of cognitive coaching, peer coaching, mentoring and linguistic coaching, to name a few. All of these models of coaching have several things in common. Typically, teachers are the ones benefiting from the coaching experience as the Coach observes another’s performance and shares his or her expertise with that person. There may be a series of questions asked, but the Coach is seen as a source of information. Content of each coaching session revolves around performance issues and teaching practices.

Business or organizational coaching, however, has evolved somewhat differently, especially over the last ten years. Although this model of coaching is fairly new, it has made a significant mark on the corporate and business world. In this form of coaching the Coach is seen as the expert in coaching process, not in a specific content or performance area. Benefits include higher morale, attraction of new talent, employee retention and increased productivity, satisfaction and effectiveness of training. Because coaching has been found to positively affect the “bottom line” in business, many corporations employ Coaches to improve business results. Coaches acknowledge the connection between the whole person and performance on the job: how successful we are at work is directly connected to our life as a whole. Coaching has become the primary innovative approach to meeting needs in the business community and this dynamic coaching may prove to be the “missing link”to success in school coaching.

What kind of coaching is this and what does it accomplish?
A framework for dynamic coaching in our schools provides the previously-missing link to creating a culture of leadership and success by enabling individuals to identify goals and achieve goals while maintaining satisfaction and motivation. Such a framework would include the following defining characteristics:

• Coaching that uses communication to effectively interact and develop people.
• Coaching that builds a collaborative, highly effective school culture where people use their strengths to best serve students.
• Coaching that fully develops the person or team being coached by helping them identify their talents and motivation to achieve their goals.
• Coaching that focuses on the goals and agenda of the person being coached instead of on the Coach’s agenda.
• Coaching that creates a trusting environment which includes confidentiality, mutual respect, focus and intentional, powerful language. These elements make it possible for the person being coached to achieve more than could have been accomplished otherwise.
• Coaching that focuses on the “people side” of school culture, so that within teaching and learning, greater performance goals can be achieved.
• Coaching success that is measured by the development of the person being coached, as well as the impact on student achievement.

How can I participate in this type of coaching?
Schools can receive coaching not only for their teachers but also for support personnel, such as school coaches or administrators, because schools who have support personnel who work directly with teachers want to make sure they have the coaching and communication skills needed to be more effective. .

Coaching is also available on an individual basis.

Schools and districts are finding, as industry has, that real benefits are realized when they invest money in their employees to impact performance. Make sure that your staff receives the training and coaching they need to be successful. Because coaching is what make training dollars count, so each staff development program should include both training and follow-up coaching.

Choose one of these flexible programs that best meets your needs:

Option A Includes:
In Person Program: Face-to-face 2 day training
6 months of in person follow-up coaching

Option B Includes:
A Distance learning model : Via teleclass and telephone
(all training and coaching is done via telephone)*

Option C Includes:
A Combination Program: One day training with teleclass
* support and ongoing coaching using a combination of telephone and face-to-face dialogues

*A teleclass is a marvelous new teaching tool that is being used by leading training and education centers around the world. Here’s how the teleclass works: From the comfort of your own home or office (or any phone, anywhere!) you dial a phone number and--instantly--you are connected to everyone else in the class. This is not a conference call; there is no operator. You just dial in! The instructor then leads a lively, highly interactive discussion with class members--just like being in a room together but without being able to see your fellow classmates.
